At its core, the disc thickener concentrates low‑consistency slurry by combining gravity filtration and vacuum suction - the standard operating method of Rotary Vacuum Filtration equipment. The Rotary Vacuum Filtration process runs through the following steps:

 

Slurry enters the tank. The low‑concentration slurry to be thickened is fed by pipeline into the tank (the slurry vat) of the concentrator.

 

Disc immersion and filter layer formation. A set of fan‑shaped filter plates (discs) mounted on a rotating shaft are partially submerged in the slurry. As the discs rotate slowly, gravity and the liquid level difference across the plates cause fibers to adhere to the filter cloth, building up an initial fiber mat (filter cake), while water passes through the cloth into the disc interior.

 

Dewatering and concentration. Once a disc rotates clear of the slurry, the cake continues to dewater under gravity. At the same time, the disc interior is connected to a distribution valve. As the rotation angle changes, the valve automatically shifts to the vacuum zone, and vacuum suction pulls further water out of the cake - substantially raising the slurry concentration. This vacuum‑assisted dewatering is a key part of the Rotary Vacuum Filtration cycle.

 

Cake stripping and discharge. When the disc reaches the discharge point (typically at the top or a designated unloading position), the distribution valve switches to the back‑blow air zone. Compressed air blows from inside, often together with a scraper, to strip the dewatered cake from the filter cloth. The cake drops into the discharge chute or screw conveyor below.

 

White water recovery. The filtrate (white water) that has passed through the filter cloth collects inside the disc and leaves via the distribution valve. This water is normally clear enough to be returned to the system and reused.
